Radio Communication Example for
an APEX Training Flight at RCFN

AFA13 (callsign: APEX 13) is going to take a local circuit (pattern) training at Fongnian aerodrome (RCFN). Following example shows a full picture of radio communication between the ATCs and student pilots during the training flight.

Phrases marked with frames would be variable under different situations.

Basically, a local training flight would be handed-off between ATC positions as following sequence, Delivery → Ground → Tower. However, smaller airports may not have Delivery or Ground; in case, make the initial contact with Ground or Tower, respectively.

On VATSIM, if DEL, GND and TWR all are not online at the time, initially contact Approach. If there is no Approach as well, initially contact Control. If there is no ATC, self-announcement on UNICOM (122.8MHz) is required.

Step 1) copy ATIS

Fongnian Airport, information for arrival and departure ZULU, 0200Z. Expect LDA approach or RNP-F approach runway 04. NOTAM (eg. runway or taxiway closed). Wind 010 degrees 6 knots, varying between 320 and 070 degrees. Visibility 10 kilometers or more. Clouds few 2200 feet, broken 7000 feet. Temperature 22 Dew Point 15. QNH 1021 hectopascals. No SIG. Departure frequency 119.4. Inform Kaohsiung Approach or Fongnian Tower on initial contact you have ZULU.

Step 2) After copying the ATIS message, make you initial contact with Fongnian Ground (Delivery is not on service) for all VFR and IFR clearance.

AFA13: Fongnian Ground, AFA13, APEX ramp (apron), information ZULU. Request VFR local circuit training, altitudes 1100, request engine start.

Fongnian Ground: AFA13, start up approved, Squawk 0673, when ready contact Fongnian Tower 118.1, good day. Or (remain my frequency).

AFA13: Squawk 0673, engine start up approved, AFA13.

Step 3) When ready to taxi out, call Fongnian Tower for taxi clearance.

(NOTE: In Fongnian aerodrome, Fongnian Ground is only responsible for issuing departure clearance, rarely give push back clearance for civilian aircrafts who park at east apron and face to the terminal)

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13, APEX ramp, ready to taxi.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, taxi to holding point runway 04, via taxiway C1, W, A.

AFA13: Taxi to holding point runway 04, via taxiway C1, W, A, AFA13.

Step 4) Ready for departure.

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13, holding short runway 04, ready for departure.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, roger, standby. [Pilots should not respond]

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, line up and wait runway 04.

AFA13: Line up and wait runway 04, AFA13.

Step5) Take off clearance.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, after airborne, left turn join west circuit, maintain VFR 1100, runway 04, wind 360 degrees 5 knots, cleared for takeoff. Report downwind.

AFA13: After airborne, left turn join west circuit, maintain VFR 1100, cleared for takeoff, report downwind.

Step 6) Traffic pattern downwind report.

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13 downwind, request (touch and go / stop and go / full stop / low approach – type of landing requested).

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, after touch and go, left turn join west circuit, report downwind. Runway 04, wind 360 degrees 5 knots, cleared for touch and go.

AFA13: Cleared for touch and go runway 04, left turn to join west circuit, report downwind.

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13 downwind, request make a short approach and touch and go runway 04.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, short approach is approved, runway 04, wind 010 degrees 7 knots, cleared for touch and go. After touch and go, left turn join west circuit, report downwind.

AFA13: Cleared for touch and go runway 04, left turn to join west circuit, report downwind.

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13 downwind, request full stop.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13 roger, runway 04, wind 010 degrees 7 knots, cleared to land.

AFA13: Runway 04, cleared to land, AFA13.

Step 7) Traffic pattern holding instructions.

SCENARIO 1(Just one airline traffic inbound, one traffic in the pattern)

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, hold on west downwind or (make one orbit right) due to inbound traffic.

AFA13: Hold on downwind, AFA13.

(After airline traffic receive landing clearance and joined final)

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, continue downwind, proceeding traffic Glory ATR-72 around south of Fongnian 900FT descending, report traffic insight. 

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13 has traffic insight. 

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, say type of landing?

AFA13: Fongnian Tower, AFA13 request (type of landing requested).

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, follow proceeding traffic, number two cleared for (type of landing requested) runway 04.

AFA13: Cleared for (type of landing requested) runway 04, AFA13.

SCENARIO 2(one airline traffic inbound, two or three traffics in the pattern)

Fongnian Tower: “APF13 hold at Li-Chia due to inbound traffic”

Pilot 1: “Hold at Li-chia, AFA13”

Fongnian Tower: “APEX 62 hold at Tai-Pin. (For your information, company traffic DA-40 holding at Li-chia + altitude 1000FT)”

Pilot 2: “Hold at Tai-Pin, APEX 62 (Will maintain visual separation from company

Traffic DA-40.)”

 (After airline traffic receive landing clearance and joined final)

Tower: “AFA13, proceeding traffic Glory ATR-72 around south of Fongnian 400FT on final, continue downwind, report traffic insight”

 (When pilot 1 sees traffic)

Pilot 1: “Fongnian Tower, AFA13 has traffic insight “

Fongnian Tower: “AFA13 follow proceeding traffic, say type of landing?

Pilot 1: “Fongnian Tower, AFA13 request (touch and go / full stop)”

Fongnian Tower: “AFA13 wind 010 degrees 7 knots. Cleared for (type of landing requested)

runway 04.”

Pilot 1: “Cleared for (type of landing) runway 04, AFA13”

 (After pilot 1 leave Li-Chia holding area on base/extend downwind)

Fongnian Tower: “APA62 company traffic DA-40 on base/extend downwind, continue downwind, report traffic insight”

 (When pilot 2 sees traffic)

Pilot 2: “Fongnian Tower, AFA62 has company traffic DA-40 insight “.

Fongnian Tower: “AFA62 follow company traffic, say type of landing?

Pilot 2: “Fongnian Tower, APA2 request (touch and go / full stop)”

Fongnian Tower: “AFA62, wind 020 degrees 7 knots. Cleared for (type of landing requested)

runway 04.”

Pilot 2: “Cleared for (type of landing) runway 04, APA62”. 

Step 8) After landing, taxi to APEX ramp.

Fongnian Tower: AFA13, taxi via C, W, C1 to APEX ramp.

AFA13: C, W, C1 to APEX ramp, AFA13.
